Storytime with Uncle Story

Uncle Story Program

What is the Uncle Story Program?

The Storytime with Uncle Story program is an early childhood literacy program designed for children K3-K5 but can easily be enjoyed by people of all ages. Each story has an underlying environmental or agricultural theme. While it is typically enjoyed on the grounds at the Mississippi Agriculture and Forestry Museum, we’re pleased to make some of the programs available online, complete with full lesson plans. Each lesson includes a pre-activity, a recorded video of the Storytime with Uncle Story program, a post-activity, and copies of any printables needed.

Who is Uncle Story?

Uncle Story is a puppet character based on Storey Littleton Parkman. He was born July 6, 1872, and died January 1, 1960, at the age of 87. Uncle Sto, as he was called by his many nieces and nephews, was the youngest, and only son of Amelia and Jasper Parkman. Storey never married, choosing to live his entire life at the family’s farmstead. As a child, he was blinded in one eye when a splinter from the wood he was chopping hit him in the eye. Despite this, he was an avid reader. Family members remember him reading to them and sharing books. We hope to pass along Uncle Sto’s love of reading to everyone who interacts with “Uncle Story”.

Why is Uncle Story important to the MS Ag & Forestry Museum?

Storey Littleton Parkman was the last person to live at the Fortenberry-Parkman Farmstead. He was a prominent and well-respected farmer within the community. The family farmstead was moved to the Mississippi Agriculture and Forestry Museum prior to its official opening in 1983.
